about

Rabbi Meerkat is the personal project of drummer George Baltas. Baltas has an extensive discography playing drums and percussion for various bands and artists ranging from prog rock (founding member of Mother Turtle) to drone (founding member of Six Steps Above the Earth) and everything in between.

Bellerophone is the personal project of experimental musician Dimitris Santziliotis. Santziliotis mixes his diverse influences with analogue gear and techniques to create dark unsettling atmospheres.

The title of the album reflects both the music, in the sense that these two musicians push the limits of their art, but also the album cover. Depicting humanity’s potential to be a guardian but also a destroyer of nature.

The work we present in this split album is deeply rooted in the ideal of what can be defined as avant garde music: “Avant garde music is considered to be at the forefront of innovation in its field”. Listening to the album with that in mind can help guide the listener.

Rabbi Meerkat’s songs are based on rhythms that are not only technically but more importantly aesthetically innovative. A myriad of items are used to create a rich environment of percussive sounds. Keys, bass and some vocals are there not to take away from the rhythms but to accompany and enrich them.

Bellerophone presents a 24 minute composition starting off with a section inspired by field recordings then easing into an ambient lullaby, numbing all senses except hearing. The listener gets transported inside the ambient soundscape and is left there to explore. Field recordings appear again before the second half of the piece where rhythm is introduced alongside some drone elements and samples, experimenting with the idea of what a “song” can be.
